We strongly encourage you to take time to further research these and the many other ingredients in your personal care products. Most consumers are unaware that the FDA does not test or require testing of cosmetics products before they are sold. And, has admitted to their inability to research or control these substances. Therefore, companies can and do put unlimited amounts of toxic chemicals in personal care products. Many of these chemicals are in body washes, baby products, pet products, hair products, toothpaste, deodorant, etc. Please read the labels on your products and find out as much as you can about these ingredients. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate - SLS is found in shampoos, bath gels, car washes, dish detergents, bar "soaps", laundry detergents, toothpaste, etc. It is a wetting and dispersing agent, emulsifier, degreaser and foamer. Increases hair loss and promote skin and scalp irritation in sensitive individuals. May produce skin and hair damage includinag cracking and inflammation. SLS is a known skin irritant and is used in lotion tests. First the skin is irritated with SLS - then the soothing effects of the lotion is tested on it. Fragrance - In August 2005, when scientists published a study finding a relationship between plasticizers called phthalates and feminization of U.S. male babies, they named fragrance as a possible culprit. Pathalates - Industry representatives have fielded questions about research linking the fragrance ingredients called phthalates to low testosterone and stunted reproductive system development in baby boys. Parabens - This is basically a chemical preservative used to extend the shelf life of personal care product, allowing the manufacturer to add abundant amounts of water to their products. When these estrogen-like cosmetic preservatives called parabens were found in human breast tumor tissue, researchers questioned if deodorant was the source. And when studies show, again and again, that hormone systems in wildlife are thrown in disarray by common water pollutants, once again the list of culprits include personal care products, rinsing down drains and into rivers. A new study shows that the popular preservative called MIT, or methylisothiazolinone, kills neurons and impairs brain signaling in laboratory animals. 1,4-Dioxane - is considered a ‘contaminant’ or ‘by-product’ of the ethoxylation process. The cancer-causing petrochemical ethylene oxide is used by companies to make their harsh ingredients become milder. 1,4-Dioxane is also suspected as a kidney toxicant, neurotoxicant and respiratory toxicant, among others, according to the California EPA. This toxin is present in products with synthetic ingredients, including those with myreth, oleth, laureth, ceteareth, any other "eth," PEG, polyethylene, polyethylene glycol, polyoxyethylene, or oxynol, in their names. Because it is a contaminant produced during manufacturing, the FDA does not require it to be listed as an ingredient on product labels. |
